Eye Care 4 Haiti Part 2

Eye Care 4 Haiti Part 2
HELP HOSPITAL"

The sign cries out for help.
Who knew it was the
name of the hospital.

Meals hurried
in a crumbling ruin.
Tents put up
very very soon
Rest, rest I need to sleep.
I can't breathe
I can't believe
Hatians live this every day.    RS

Terror of the night
Cocks' combs torn
throughout the fight

Waiting, waiting for the dawn
Each breath squeezed tight
When will it end
The terror of the night?  RS

There was no advance notice that we were coming, no signs, no banners; but, somehow,
500 people made the trip to the hospital on foot, waiting from 7 AM in the heat for our arrival at 9.

Hundreds gather to clear their sight
This must be only a dream in the night
Open my eyes to my yesterday
Chastise this dream and chase it away

Dr. Ron Siwoff was greeted with the first low vision patient of the day. This elderly man had found his way to the hospital without any family or friend to help him. He was diagnosed with a sarcoma of the eye, a malignancy which affects the brain and results in imminent death. He said he had been brought to a hospital in Port-au-Prince for surgery, but had been turned away for lack of money. We referred him to the ophthalmologist who was expected later in the week. He gave gentle thanks. How we wished we could do more! The need here is so great.

Dr. Dan Desrivieres screened children at a local school. Many children are school-phobic since the earthquake. They are afraid to go into a building they think might collapse.

This lucky young lady received a new pair of glasses right on the spot, thanks to donors such as Essilor International.

The buck stops here!

Children are our future. Many children died. Many were orphaned. Those that remain are somber. One of our doctors noted:"I haven't seen any kids playing ball here."

'

Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink.'

Tents and more tents
none of them strong
memories, riches, lives are all gone
put up a tent  RS
and join the crew
begin again to make life anew
straighten a dress
put on a shirt
I am not what you see
 I am not dirt
